The Development of EOR
EOR is the result of at least a decade of brainstorming, field research, education, trial and error, many failed attempts and eventual success. Developed by Patrick Young, an equine sports medicine veterinarian who rides cutting horses when time allows. Dr. Young came up with the concept of EOR while training for an Ironman triathlon, turns out you have a lot of time to think during 4-5 hour bike training sessions.
Horses are one of the closest species that we can compare to humans as far as exercise physiology that involves athletic performance and sweating. Definitely a little different but some sports nutrition and exercise physiology can be compared here. Sweating is an adaptation that helps dissipate heat. Most human athletes drink a recovery drink, energy gel, etc. while training and competing. In our observations, that’s the last thing a horse gets before, during, and after exercise for fear of colic. Rightfully so! We call the original EOR strip PERI-WORKOUT nutrition for horses. Until now this has not really been an option. The original EOR strip was created to bypass the stomach and supply a little nutritional support in times of need when it otherwise is avoided.
EOR strips use unique formulas combined with a proprietary microencapsulation delivery mechanism allowing the nutrients to absorb directly into the bloodstream. Along with the help of Dr. Jeff Breit, PhD in pharmacology, we came up the idea of equine oral film strips while trying to come up with a better delivery method. Dr. Young has tried everything from formulations involving paste to pellets, etc, We see the future potential of this application and pursue it with “dogged’ determination. We can see old and new forms of medication delivery that utilize the oral mucosa as the target absorption layer, such as Dormosedan gel to sedate a horse.
EOR can be readily used with your existing products and synergistically aid in the health, performance and recovery of your horse. LOOK, there are many great feed and supplement companies making beneficial products for performance horses. That’s why we are not trying
to compete with them, we recommend those products to our clients every day in clinical practice. By using a different but complementary approach in our novel delivery route and advances in
microencapsulation technology we hope to offer a new targeted delivery or future formulas.

“Veterinary technology meets common horse sense!”
A lot of life experiences has led me to this point, but being a huge fan of the horse is what inspires my tenacity and persistence. I‘ve been working on this for over a decade, not just for me, but for the health of the horse.
I have pitched our concept of targeting equine oral mucosal delivery for nutritional supplements to basically every pharmaceutical and nutritional company/exhibitor out there. I’ve hunted, stalked, knocked and pounded on lots of other doors looking for an equine health/nutritional company to takeover my bird doggin and license this product, to no avail. Few signed NDA’s or showed any interest in licensing this product and delivery method. I’ve lobbied for funding, entered early stage entrepreneur company contest and wasted time talking to VC investors, all to be turned down and rejected many times over. Fortunately, we have patents and documentation to protect us moving forward and I have surrounded myself with leaders in the industry. I have been an underdog my entire life many times over on different levels. Grit is an immeasurable quality that I’m fortunate to have in excess.
As an equine veterinarian, collectively we are extremely competitive, we want to be the best, do our best, we push each other forward. Our sole purpose, our job… is to make your horse better and I do it with passion and genuine compassion. I do it by, maximizing minimal potential in some cases, including my own. Sometimes common sense, limitations in budget and realistic goals open avenues to achieve greatness from a different perspective. In doing so, we create new opportunities, new ways of doing things, new possibilities, new horizons. And we may use five different treatments for one problem. EOR is just giving yall another option as a competitive edge and an option to keep your horses as healthy possible.
As our clientele evolves, that doesn’t want to administer injections, so must we.
We aren’t competing with other supplement companies, we are adding a new way of delivering equine supplements and eventually medication in much smaller fractions. Doing something that’s never been done in the equine industry is not for the weak minded. I’ve got the grit of a Jack Russell that saw a mouse in the tackroom wall 2 weeks ago but still hunts it like a savage. A business advisor and veteran equine nutritional specialist said, “Pat, who is gonna look after and have the passion for this product as much as you?”
That’s when I stopped looking for potential licensees and started bootstrapping production and marketing. I’m a clinical veterinarian with common sense and a science/tech guy bringing this product to market out of necessity. This product NEEDS to be on the market and fill a void in our industry, a void that I see daily. As much as I talk about improving performance, etc. EOR needs to be there for the health of the horse! We ask them to jump in a trailer, travel hours on end, jump out and compete, and be disappointed when it’s uncharacteristically subpar. Imagine that! And so here we are! Bioneering innovative solutions one strip at a time.I promise you this, I’m gonna treat your horse like it’s mine, just as I do in clinical veterinary practice every dadgum day.
